Providence Christian's Lady Lions won big in a regional elimination game against Nashville Christian with a 64-36 home victory over the Eagles in front of a standing-room crowd Tuesday night.
“It’s another one of those win-or-go-home games, which I always feel the pressure on,” PCA coach Tara James said. “I felt like our energy was there and the crowd obviously helped with that. The girls that were here last year are hungry after being upset, and experience is everything. I think they are ready for the challenge.”
The Lions came out swinging and jumped to an early lead, and exponentially increased their lead throughout the game, including the fourth quarter as the PCA bench began to clear.
The Lions were coming off a big district championship win over CPA and have high hopes for a deep run, but had to stay focused not to overlook any teams like NCA.
“You can’t underestimate any team come tournament time,” PCA sophomore standout AC Markham said. “Everybody is coming for you. We are a pretty mature team. We like to have fun and are high spirited, but when it comes to court time we get focused.”
Markham is as sophomore who has emerged as a leader on a team that has made it this far.
“This next semifinal game we owe both FRA and Clarksville Academy a win,” Markham said. “So we will be super motivated and pumped up. I know we will come out hard. We have a good team this year, probably one of the best PCA has had. So we are going to take advantage of it.”
PCA got a huge night from Yaubry Chambers, who netted 22 to lead all scorers. Sydney Gibson had 10 in the first but suffered an injury seconds into the third that sidelined her the remainder.
PCA’s journey takes them to Davidson Academy to face their next opponent (TBD) in the regional tournament.
