Riverdale’s boys broke open a close game with Providence Christian Academy Thursday night and raced off to a 60-37 victory at PCA.
The game was put together on the same day after PCA’s original opponent, Columbia Academy, was unable to play due to COVID issues.
The game was close throughout the first half as there were five ties. Riverdale scored the final six points of the first half to go up 22-16 at the break.
It continued to stay close in the second half as the Lions got as close at one. However, Riverdale’s Santonio McDaniel scored on a three-point play and Damon Fann added a bucket to push the lead back to five.
PCA’s Austin Thompson scored on a three-point play near the end of the third quarter to pull with Lions within three at 31-28.
The final stanza saw pressure defense and turnovers by the Warriors as they went on a 13-2 run to take a 46-30 advantage.
“We preach it every day to pass and catch the basketball,” PCA coach Kerry Hammonds said. “We had too many turnovers and were not able to overcome Riverdale’s pressure defense.”
Riverdale outscored PCA 27-9 in the fourth quarter and outscored the Lions at the foul line 20-5.
“We got a ton of shots but did not make them,” Riverdale coach Michael Voss said. “We did move the ball and drove to the rim. We created some turnovers with steals and layups.”
