Siegel’s boys won their final game before Christmas Tuesday night, leading wire-to-wire for a 70-63 home victory over Ravenwood.
The Stars led by as many as 20 points in the first half before the Raptors answered with a 21-7 run to cut the deficit to 35-27 early in the second half.
The key player for Ravenwood was Evan Gainer, who scored 13 of his 23 points in the first half with post moves and a 3-pointer.
“I was proud of the way we battled back after we got down by 20 as that was not part of the game plan,” Ravenwood coach Patrick Whitlock said. “We still have a ways to go. I love my team and we have good days ahead of us.”
“When they back off of me I can hit a 3,” Gainer said. “My teammates did a good job of passing and cutting and getting me the ball.” “Siegel is a great team. This game will make us ready for district play and we will be a team to be concerned about later in the season,”
Ravenwood continued to battle back as it cut the lead to five in the fourth quarter at 52-47.
However, Siegel went on a 10-2 run to take a 12-point advantage and put the game away at the free-throw line. The Stars were 21 of 24 overall at the line.
“We work on free throws every day in practice,” Siegel coach Dyron Birdwell said. “It is a time for us to concentrate and no one talks.”
Siegel has played a tough non-district slate that they feel will get them ready for the rest of the season.
“Ravenwood only had one loss going into tonight and when we played Station Camp last week they had two losses and we lost to Ensworth,” Birdwell said. “These games will get us ready for February and March.”
Gainer led all scorers with 23 points. Siegel had three players in double figures, led by the Missouri Western signees Zion Swader with 18 points and Matthew Schneider 14. Jaylan Wetzel added 13 as Siegel improved to 6-1.
