Smyrna shuts out Antioch for fourth straight win

ANTIOCH—The Smyrna Bulldogs dominated the Antioch Bears 42-0 to get their fourth straight win to improve to 4-2 on the season Friday night.

The Bulldogs offensive firepower came behind the strong running back tandem of Zereous Johnson and Mikel Hartfield, who combined for nearly 250 yards and five touchdowns.

“Our O-Line works very hard every day,” Johnson said. “They’re the first ones there at practice. They’re the hardest workers on our team. Pound and ground is what we (Smyrna) preach. Me and Mikel (Hartfield) did our thing and that was the outcome.”

Antioch’s offense strung some plays together but still couldn’t manage to find the end zone for the third straight game. Smyrna scored on its first six possessions and didn’t punt until late in the third quarter.

“We’ve stayed the course and our practice habits have led to good things and they never got down on themselves. They bought what we were selling and didn’t panic.” Williams said of overcoming an 0-2 start.

Meanwhile, it’s been another long Friday night for the Bears of Antioch. The Bears haven’t scored a touchdown since the second game of the season, and have been outscored 222-0 in the last four games.

“We’re still learning, we’re still a young team, but we’re (Antioch) getting better,” Antioch first-year coach Ian Marshall said. “It’s only so much you can teach the guys and we’re still trying to learn to make plays. That’s where we are right now.”

The Bulldogs are now 3-0 in league play riding this four-game winning streak and have a big game with first place on the line against Cane Ridge next week.

“We have to have a really good week of practice,” Williams said. “You win ball games Monday through Thursday, and Cane Ridge is a really good football team. We’re going to have a really good week of practice and play a really good game to beat a really good team.”
