MT. JULIET – Siegel hammered in a pair of late touchdowns to finish off an impressive fourth-quarter comeback as the Stars rallied for a 29-21 victory at Green Hill Friday.

“Somehow, someway our kids dug down and got it done in the fourth quarter. it showed some guts,” Siegel coach Adam Renshaw said.

Down 21-16 early in the fourth quarter, the Stars matched their entire victory total from 2020 heading into this Friday’s contest at La Vergne.

The first quarter ended scoreless after a solid 12 minutes of bend, but not break defense.

Both teams found themselves in scoring position with neither managed to convert.

Hawks corner Heath Monast thwarted a Siegel touchdown by breaking up a pass in the end zone, forcing the Stars to settle for a 26-yard field goal from AJ Florence at the 8:47 mark in the second quarter.

Siegel inserted Thomas Santel into the game at quarterback later in the second, and he immediately broke free on a 55-yard run that moved his team within striking distance.

Cory Sims then took a handoff at the five and found pay dirt, lifting Siegel to a 10-0 lead after the extra point from Florence.

Green Hill answered on the next offensive play with a nifty double reverse to Caleb Carver that he took 55 yards to the house.

The electric run put the Hawks on the board, trailing 10-7 following a Sam Crickmar extra point.

Everything seemed to be going Green Hill’s way as David Childress intercepted Santel’s pass on the next drive.

An excellent return gave the Hawks the ball on the Stars’ 40-yard line with 1:45 to play in the first half.

With momentum swinging towards the Hawks, Siegel’s Jaylen Thompson intercepted Cade Mahoney’s pass near the goal line and took the ball 99 yards to the house.

The Hawks blocked the extra point as Siegel took a 16-7 lead into intermission.

Green Hill opened the scoring in the third quarter following a well-executed nine-play, 62-yard scoring drive completed by a 5-yard touchdown pass from Cade Mahoney to Caleb Karver.

The Hawks trailed the Stars 16-14 with 5:16 to play after the Crickmar’s extra point.

A special teams turnover by Carver gave the Stars the ball at the 10-yard line, and the Hawks came up with a huge goal-line stand by forcing a turnover on downs late in the third.

The Hawks marched their way to the Red Zone on their next possession with some well-executed offense.

QB Cade Mahoney scooped up a fumbled snap and found Carver for a 21-yard touchdown play, his third of the night.

A Crickmar extra-point gave Green Hill a 21-16 lead early in the fourth quarter.

The Stars immediately went on a 10-play, 44-yard touchdown drive completed by a Cory Sims 2-yard dive into the end zone.

Siegel’s 2-point conversion was no good, and it held a 22-21 lead with 2:55 to play in the contest.

Disaster struck Green Hill when a high snap in punt formation gave Siegel the ball at the Hawk 1-yard line.

A 1-yard Braden Kaiser scamper followed by a Boko Nanneman extra point iced the game for Siegel.

Green Hill’s Carver was brilliant in the loss, finishing with eight receptions for 94 yards and two scores.

He added a third TD on a 55-yard carry.

“Our goal is to be a playoff team,” said Green Hill coach Josh Crouch. “If we can learn from this, when we get into district play, we can get those wins.”

Green Hill (0-1) is scheduled to play at Kenwood High Friday, Aug. 27.
