SMYRNA — Stewarts Creek’s Lady Red Hawks used a hot hand in the first half to defeat the Oakland Lady Patriots at home 74-47 Tuesday night.

“I thought we had good team effort and our defense played outstanding,” Stewarts Creek coach Bianca Hensley said after her team improved to 3-0 in district play. “They had active hands on defense, and I thought they played with a lot of pride in sharing the basketball.”

The Lady Red Hawks defense stymied Oakland in the first half, holding the Lady Patriots to just 11 field goal attempts in 16 minutes. Stewarts Creek combined its full-court pressure into easy transition points, including seven 3-pointers.

“Shots fell when we spread the floor, drove and kick to the open shooter,” leading scorer Madison Henegar said. “Our defense is strong and being able to full-court press for an entire game, it can wear down our opponents”

Henegar showed no signs of fatigue on her way to a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds. The senior scored on 10 of 13 from the floor with four triples.

Oakland brought energy on the defensive end into the second half after trailing 44-23. Stewarts Creek remained scoreless through the opening three minutes before forcing four straight turnovers and converting it into a 9-0 run.

“I think being able to limit offensive rebounds helped because we knew (Oakland) is good offensive rebound team,” Henegar added as the Red Hawks allowed just seven offensive boards.

Zhordan and Zyion Shannon duo stuffed the stat sheet Tuesday evening. Zhordan scored 19 points and four rebounds for the Lady Red Hawks while sister Zyion contributed nine points, six assists and three steals.

“Zhordan contributed a lot for us, she scored tough baskets and Zyion did a great job of finding her teammates,” Hensley said.

Oakland’s Claira McGowan created the biggest problem for Stewarts Creek, scoring 24 points, 12 coming from the charity stripe.
