Lebanon 64, Beech 55

LEBANON — Running out 15-1 in the early going, Lebanon held off a valiant Beech comeback try in Friday’s 64-55 District 9AAA win over the Bucs at Campbell Brandon Gymnasium.

Beechy (13-8 / 3-3) pulled ahead 46-45 with two minutes gone in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Kaleb Powell, but the Blue Devils slammed the door with an 18-10 run — including seven consecutive by junior Kobe Tibbs.

Tibbs, who led all scorers with 20 points, converted an old fashioned three-point play with 2:10 remaining in regulation, then proceeded to calmly sink four straight from the line to push Lebanon’s lead out to 64-51.

Tibbs scored 14 over the final eight minutes, including 8-of-9 at the charity stripe.

Beech could only muster four points during the final 1:21.

“After they jumped all over us early, we played hard the rest of the way,” said Beech coach Kip Brown. “But over the last four minutes, we couldn’t make shots. We went something like 0-for-10 on three’s during that stretch.”

Lebanon (16-3 / 5-1) got 14 points from senior post David Greene and 10 from Jamar Kynard. Gaven Reasonover added eight — including a 30-footer that beat the third quarter buzzer.

The Blue Devils had a solid night at the free throw line, canning 15-of-18 attempts (83 percent).

“We were executing well, then Beech changed to a 1-2-2 zone and we got a little stagnant and gave up some transition baskets,” said LHS coach Jim McDowell. “They’re a good team, they’ve got some length and some guys who can score.”

Beech senior Jyquale Matthews connected on a pair of 3-pointers and led the Bucs with 14 points.

Powell added 11 and Andrew Paige chipped in with 10 as Beech finished 9-of-15 at the line (60 percent).

LHS is slated to host Portland Tuesday, Jan. 21 and will play at Mt. Juliet Jan. 24.

Mt. Juliet 60, Station Camp 53

GALLATIN — Will Prutte and Gage Wells helped key an 11-2 fourth quarter surge as Mt. Juliet pulled away from Station Camp for a 60-53 District 9AAA road win Friday.

Tied at 36 early in the fourth, Pruitte converted an old-fashioned three-point play, then back-to-back Gage Well’s 3-pointers gave the Bears a 47-36 lead with just under seven minutes to play.

“Gage is a special shooter and has been hitting big shots for us for the last two years,” Mt. Juliet coach Troy Allen said. “I think Will does a great job of finding him when most people can’t.”

The fourth quarter was a far cry from the third frame as the district foes battled back-and-forth after halftime.

The third quarter featured six lead changes and two ties before eventually Mt. Juliet managed a 36-34 lead.

Friday’s contest marked the second consecutive district road win for the Bears and came on the heels of an 81-39 victory at Hendersonville on Jan. 14.

“I was proud of them tonight,” Allen said. “This is a special group of guys and I doubt there are many teams that are as focused as we are on a daily basis. It is a pleasure to coach them.”

Station Camp will likely look back at this loss as a missed opportunity. The Bison secured 10 offensive rebounds but just two second chance points.

Mt. Juliet tallied 20 points in the paint, four 3-pointers, and turned the ball over just three times.

“I thought our defense was great tonight except for the few times we helped off (Cameron) Gerlach,” he said.

“We weren’t getting back to our help side and blocking him out on the glass. We gave up 10 glass points and against a team like this that is about as good as you can do. Credit Station Camp for the offensive rebounds. They have a size advantage on us and really took advantage. I thought we did a much better job in the second half, and getting him (Gerlach) in foul trouble was huge.”

The loss for Station Camp drops the Bison to 12-8 overall and 2-4 in league play while the Bears improve to 15-2 and 6-0 in District 9AAA.

The Bears play at Wilson Central Tuesday, Jan. 21 and return home to take on rival Lebanon Jan. 24.
