Cookeville grad Taylor Hennigan named head coach at alma mater

Taylor Hennigan is coming home to take over his alma mater.

Hennigan has been named the new head football coach at Cookeville, the school he graduated from in 2009.

He replaces Jimmy Maynord, who retired last month after leading the Cavalier program to a 54-36 record over the last nine seasons.

“Coach Hennigan will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our football program. His energy, passion and enthusiasm for the game of football and students is evident, and we believe the student athletes will thrive under his leadership. We are fortunate to have him as our head coach,” Cookeville athletic director Stephen Robbins said.

The Cavaliers finished their 2021 season at 1-9. Cookeville made the Class 6A playoffs seven straight times (2013-19), but failed to qualify for the postseason the past two years.

Hennigan spent this season as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at Gardner-Webb University.

Before arriving at Gardner-Webb, Hennigan spent two seasons as an assistant for Tennessee Tech, where he played college football from 2009-12.

He was also an assistant coach at White County after graduating from Tennessee Tech.

Currently 16 schools in Baylor, Chester County, Clay County, Columbia, Columbia Academy, Liberty Creek, Lincoln County, Melrose, Northeast, South Gibson, South Pittsburg, Tullahoma, Wartburg, West Creek, Westwood and White Station are in the market for a head coach.
