Commanders move to 5-3 overall –
RED BOILING SPRINGS – Friendship Christian improved to 5-3 on the season following Thursday’s 49-0 victory at Red Boiling Springs — the third in a row for the Commanders.
FCS got a 62-yard touchdown run from Tyson Wolcott at the 11:45 mark of the first quarter, then added another score at 7:19 as Garrett Weekly connected with Riggs Rowe on a 37-yard TD pass.
Friendship Christian upped the score to 21-0 on a second Wolcott TD run, this one of 9 yards with 3:23 remaining in the period and the rout was on.
Weekly tallied on a 55-yard scramble with 2:04 left in the first and moments later Weekly hooked up with Chase Eakes for a 38-yard touchdown pass at 1:43 for a 35-0 advantage.
The Commanders closed out the first half scoring as Weekly found Brock Montgomery for a 22-yard TD pass with 2:29 remaining in the second quarter — pushing the lead to 42-0 at intermission.
A running clock started in the third quarter with the only score coming on a 50-yard interception return by Sammy Pruneau.
Sophomore kicker Landon Williams finished a perfect 7-for-7 on PAT attempts.
“It doesn’t matter who you play.” said FCS coach John McNeal. “It’s a mindset, starting with arriving at school, getting on the bus, trying to get better every game.
“We wanted to work on some things, throw the ball early, not to embarrass anyone — but to still get in some good work with my guys.
“I think we did that tonight. The older ones wanted to play more and I get that, but that’s not how we go about things.”
Weekly finished 7-of-8 passing for 187 yards and three touchdowns and had the one run for 55 and a score.
Wolcott piled up 117 yards on just five carries and scored two touchdowns. Montgomery caught three passes for 58 yards and a TD while Eakes added two receptions for 78 yards and a score. Rowe caught two balls for 51 and a TD.
The Commanders will be back in action Friday, Oct. 22 as they take on Lakeway Christian for homecoming.
In addition to crowning the homecoming queen, Friendship Christian will recognize the 2011 TSSAA state championship team.
That team closed the season with eight consecutive wins, ending 12-3 and defeated Dresden 34-0 in the state championship game.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm at Pirtle Field with homecoming ceremonies planned for 6:30 pm.
