Blue Devils move to 10-1 overall –

LEBANON – Junior Jaylen Abston threw for a season-high 275 yards and four touchdowns as Region 3-6A champion Lebanon overcame an early deficit to eliminate Stewarts Creek 42-7 in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs Friday at Clifton Tribble Field/Danny Watkins Stadium.

Abston completed 15-of-21 pass attempts with at least two drops as the Blue Devils improved to 10-1 on the season headed into a Nov. 12 home game versus 10-1 Riverdale in the TSSAA Round of 16.

Injury-riddled Stewarts Creek played without injured quarterback Gage Hoover and got only three carries for 16 yards out of tailback Gabe Walker before he was forced to exit the game with an injury.

Both teams had explosive scoring plays called back due to penalties.

A holding call negated an 81-yard reverse by Kemontez Logue and Stewarts Creek had a 74-yard jaunt by Javarion Otey called back on an illegal block.

“When we got out of our own way, we were OK on offense,” said LHS coach Chuck Gentry. “The hold on the reverse was a good call. But once again, our defense played lights out.”

Given that Stewarts Creek only score came on a special teams play, the Lebanon defense has now gone 18 consecutive quarters without giving up a point.

Linebacker Copeland Bradford and safety Brice Njezic each recovered Stewarts Creek fumbles.

Lebanon finished with 473 yards in total offense and 18 first downs while allowing the Red Hawks only 84 yards and four first downs.

With Walker sidelined, Stewarts Creek managed just 23 yards rushing of 50 carries and turned the ball over twice on fumbles.

LHS ran for 174 yards on 35 attempts, led by Abston with 64 yards on eight carries. Devin Greene added 46 yards on 10 tries and threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Logue on the halfback option.

Brandon Martin ran 10 times for 42 yards and scored a touchdown.

Junior Anthony Crowell caught seven passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns while Logue caught three balls for 57 and two scores.
