'Jackets blank Watertown 23-0 -

WATERTOWN - Trousdale County’s defense and run game turned in a dominating performance as the Yellow Jackets blanked Watertown 23-0 in Friday's quarterfinals of the Class 2A playoffs at Robinson Stadium.

With the win, TCHS improved to 11-1 on the season and advances to the semifinals Nov. 26 at Hampton.

Hampton improved to 9-2 on the season with a 30-7 win over Oneida in the quarterfinals.

Watertown saw its six-game winning streak snapped at six, ending the 2021 season 9-4.

The 'Jackets broke open a scoreless game with a pair of second quarter touchdown runs by Bryson Claiborne of 34 and 53 yards to carry a 14-0 lead into intermission.

Watertown played most of the second quarter and the entire second half without the services of senior quarterback Brayden Cousino who appeared to suffer a lower body injury.

“Brayden had been our general out there for three years,” said WHS coach Gavin Webster, “when you lose him you get behind the 8-ball and it really hurts.”

Trousdale County's Kane Burnley intercepted a Watertown pass midway through the third quarter that set up a 35-yard field goal by Colton Key -- pushing the lead to 17-0.

Claiborne, who finished with 188-yards rushing on 13 attempts, scored his third touchdown on a 69-yard gallop with 7:02, pushing Trousdale County out in front 23-0.

Cole Gregory added 68 yards on 14 carries as Trousdale County piled up 308 yards in total offense -- all on the ground.

Watertown was limited to 119 yards on 45 offensive snaps and 11 first downs.

K.K. West ran 9 times for 22 yards, Adam Cooper was limited to 21 yards on 11 rushing attempts and Cousino ran 4 times for 20 before exiting the game.

Cousino completed 4-of-7 passes for 19 yards while Bret price completed 1-of-5 for 31 yards.

Kayden Seay caught two passes for 30, Lance Fripp had one reception for 15 and Hayden Dicken finished with one catch for 11 yards.

“Nobody at the beginning of the year gave us a shot," Webster said. "For us to be back here (to the quarterfinals) means a lot and our seniors were a big part of that.

“They kept working and trusting the process. They won us a fourth straight region championship."
